Project Summary
Activities and Outcomes:
IGD has been implementing the Community Mediation Project (CMP) in Chitwan, Tanahau and
Mustang districts in cooperation with The Asia Foundation
(TAF), USAID and McConnell Foundation since 2002,
Altogether 24 VDCs/MCs have been covered by the
project in the three districts. The project provides
Mediation services at the local level with the objective of
making justice accessible to the people in the communities.
Moreover,
the
project
reporting
and
monitoring
mechanism has been at place to track the dispute and their
resolution. Moreover, the project aims at seeking to
consolidate and strengthen mediation service as peace
conflict transformation mechanism in the community.

A total of around three thousand local disputes have been resolved as of now. And altogether 97.29
percent of dispute mediated in Chitwan, Tanahau and Mustang districts have been implemented to
the mutual satisfaction of the disputes concerned. Trained mediators are actively involved in
facilitating mediation session and bringing an end to the conflicts in community.

Amicable settlement of disputes through individual self-determination of interests has been
accepted as a basis for good neighborhood and reconciliation. The Janajatis, Dalits, Madhesis,
and marginalized group are using mediation services to resolve disputes and enhance harmony in
the community. Women and people from disadvantaged groups are empowered through the
process. They serve as, among others, mediation service providers at the local level. There is a
growing recognition to the fact that justice is not delivered through confrontationist/adversarial
game played out in the judicial institutions but through interest-based discussion and negotiation
at the community level.

This project contributed directly to IGD's institutional knowledge base and helped establish long-term networks among local communities, civic leaders, and government stakeholders.
