Institute for Governance and Development (IGD) is an independent civil society organization committed to promote governance, participation, and development. It was established in 2000 (Regd. No. 413/057/58) by a multidisciplinary team of professionals and activists from diverse backgrounds including governance, human rights, public administration, and citizen empowerment.
IGD aims at promoting initiatives to enhance the rights and entitlements of citizens by increasing their competence to participate in the process of governance and sustainable development. It works to strengthen the voice and participation of citizens in defining their relations with the state, and is actively engaged in strengthening local governance where citizens promote accountability, transparency, and effective institutional service delivery.
IGD carries out actions in promoting active citizen participation in utilizing local resources, facilitating intercultural dialogues, building community mediation capacity, conducting empirical policy research, convening national/subnational conferences, and providing capacity building to local elected authorities, civil society groups, and disadvantaged communities.
IGD has been part of multi-sectoral initiatives aimed at improving government service delivery to reach out to the poor and marginalized groups. It has built the capacity of farmer organizations and private sector associations to articulate development needs, provided direct support to local government agencies to enhance public services, and integrated governance as a crosscutting theme in municipal project planning.
IGD implemented nationwide initiatives towards 'Strengthening the Voice of Marginalized Groups in the Constituent Assembly Process in Nepal' across dozens of districts. Over 14,000 citizens (52% women) participated in community dialogues. Findings were consolidated into a Citizen National Manifesto submitted directly to the Constituent Assembly to incorporate cultural and socio-economic rights into Nepal's constitution.
IGD receives grants and contributions from esteemed partners such as the European Union, GIZ, The Asia Foundation, and CIVICUS. All expenditures follow rigorous Financial Guidelines and national standards. IGD maintains a robust internal control system, and its financial accounts are audited annually by registered independent auditors and submitted to respective government authorities.
Under the Community Mediation Project and the A2J-WOMCOM program, IGD establishes local mediation centers and trains local community leaders, rural women, and municipal Judicial Committees to resolve disputes peacefully at the local level, thereby de-escalating conflicts and providing affordable justice.
