This conference is the fifth in a series of such conferences held during previous years jointly by ActionAid Nepal and the Institute for Governance and Development (IGD). The conference has been creating a platform for deliberations on emerging critical issues of democracy, social justice and democratization in Nepal.
The annual conferences on participatory democracy draw enthusiastic participation from perspective builders, scholars, advocates and practitioners of participatory democracy — from within Nepal and abroad — where experiences, perspectives and practices are shared, cross-fertilized and even contested.
The annual conference organized on 15–16 December 2016 focused on the issues bearing upon democratic governance, with special reference to the challenges of attaining the Sustainable Development Goals in Nepal. The preceding conference was held at Hotel Malla, Kathmandu on 17–18 December 2015.
The conference is a step forward towards promoting and strengthening the participatory democracy discourse in Nepal. The evolution of the "Forum for Participatory Democracy" platform at national level is grounded in the sub-national discourses held from time to time in the Eastern and Western regions of Nepal.
